What Does Questionable Mean in Fantasy Football? NFL Injury Designations, Decoded
Your star is listed as questionable and kickoff is in four hours. Here's what the designation actually means, the practice-report tells that predict it, and how to build a lineup around the uncertainty.
The official designations
Every Friday (or the day before a non-Sunday game), NFL teams must file a game status report. There are only three designations — plus the silence that says the most:

Note what's missing: “probable” was abolished in 2016. That's why today's “questionable” covers everything from “basically fine” to “true 50/50” — and why the tag alone tells you so little.
Reading the practice week
The designation is the headline; the practice report is the evidence. Teams practice Wednesday through Friday and log every player as DNP (did not practice), Limited, or Full:
- Full Friday practice + questionable:he's playing. The tag is procedural cover.
- Limited all week + questionable: genuine uncertainty — this is the true coin-flip case. Have a pivot ready.
- DNP Wednesday and Thursday, limited Friday:the classic “will be a game-time decision” pattern. Expect a Sunday-morning resolution ~90 minutes before kickoff, when inactives are announced.
- Wednesday DNP for a veteran:often just rest. Wednesday absences matter most when they're new — a player who practiced fully for weeks suddenly sitting out is a signal, not a rest day.
How to set your lineup around “questionable”
- Early games are the danger zone.A questionable player in the 1pm slot who's inactive leaves you scrambling. If your pivot plays later, you keep the option open; if your pivot plays at 1pm too, decide before inactives at ~11:30am ET.
- Never start a questionable player over a healthy one of similar quality. The upside rarely covers the zero.
- Injury type matters more than the tag.A questionable hamstring for a speed receiver is scarier than a questionable shoulder for a running back. Soft-tissue injuries also re-aggravate — a player can be active and still get pulled after two snaps.
